Taiwan is an island located 120 kilometers off the coast of China.
Taiwan "terraced bay", the name was given by its indigenous inhabitants 400 years ago.
In mid-1500, Portuguese sailors sailed around the island and called it "lha Formosa". No attempt to colonize it.
With a length of 394 kilometers and a width of 144 kilometers, two third of the island is mountainous, covered with both tropical and sub-tropical vegetation.
Total population is nearly 23 million people; over 80% live on the island west coast.
The majority of the people are ethnic Chinese.
The Fujianese in Taiwan
In 1624 the Dutch established their commercial base in Tainan and imported a vast number of laborers from Fujian.
After 38 years of colonization, the Dutch were defeated by Zheng Chengong, who lasted in power 21 years; after that, in 1683, Taiwan fell to the Qing Dinasty and became a county of Fujian Province.
Not only did the Fujianese came to Taiwan, they also went to other land in south east Asia: Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
Hakka in Taiwan
The word Hakka means "guest".
It describe an ethnic group and its language.
Many of the ancestors of the Hakka lived in the northern plains of China. Finally the settled in the South, in Guangdong Province.
Most Hakka people in Taiwan are originally from Guangdong.
They settled in: Taoyuan, Hsichu, Miaoli, and Taitung, and in the town of Meinong in Kaoshiung county.
Hakka place a significant emphasize on education and they follow traditional work ethics; they almost always shine and achieve in the workplace. Quite a number of outstanding figures are of Hakka descent: Sun Yat-Sen, Charlie Soong, Deng Xiaoping and former president Lee Teng Hui.
Japanese occupation begun in 1895 and ended in 1945.
Most significant infrastructures were started under japanese rules.
Most of Japanese left the island unconditionally in 1945; today the majority of Taiwanese tend to have a positive view of Japan.
The Mainlanders in Taiwan
1949: the communist took over the mainland; 2 million of soldiers, KMT (kuomintang) businessmen and intellectuals arrived from different provinces;
they account for about the 13% of the current population in Taiwan, while people whose ancestors have lived on Taiwan since the 1600s, and have been long rooted in Taiwan, (the so called Taiwanese, or ben shen ren, the home province people) comprise about 85%: 70% Fujianese and 15% Hakka.
After 1949 Mandarin Chinese was taught in schools in Taiwan as the official language replacing Japanese, Taiwanese and Hakka languages.
The indigenous people (shan di ren - mountain people)
They are the original native of the island.
They now make up less than 2% of the total population; the Han drove them up to the mountains; they are believed to have lived on the island for thousands of years. with intermarriages becoming more popular, it's becoming difficult to distinguish the Han Chinese from the indigenous; often it is the accent of spoken Mandarin that a specific group speaks gives you a hint as to their identity.
